Spreads

Tarot spreads

A spread is a layout where every position has its own meaning: the same card says different things in the “Past” position and in the “Outcome” position. Here are the spreads from the Numen app — with layouts, the meaning of every position and tips on how to read them.

How to choose a spread

For a simple question, one card is enough — try Yes or No tarot. For a situation that is unfolding, use three cards: Past, Present, Future or a spread on a specific topic. For complex decisions, use the Five Card Cross, the Horseshoe or the Celtic Cross.

The more cards, the more detailed the picture — and the harder it is to read. Start with three cards and move on to bigger spreads once you feel how the positions talk to each other.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards should a spread have?
Anything from one to ten or more. One card gives a quick answer, three tell a story, five to seven give a detailed picture with advice, and ten (the Celtic Cross) give a full analysis.
Can I do a spread without a physical deck?
Yes. In the Numen app the cards are shuffled and laid out in the spread, and Vesper, the AI mentor, interprets the whole reading using the positions and your question.
What about reversed cards?
A reversed card usually means a weakened, delayed or inward version of its meaning. The upright and reversed meaning of every card is in our tarot card meanings library.
