Horseshoe
The Horseshoe is a seven-card spread laid out in an arc. It follows a situation from the past to its likely outcome and separately shows hidden influences, obstacles and advice. It sits between a three-card reading and the Celtic Cross.
When to use this spread
- Questions about how to act: “What should I do about…?”.
- A situation that is unfolding, when you want to see its trajectory.
- When the Celtic Cross feels like too much and three cards too little.
Spread positions
- 1Past
What shaped the situation.
- 2Present
How things look right now.
- 3Hidden Influences
What you do not see or admit: other people’s intentions, feelings you have not noticed.
- 4Obstacles
The main difficulty you will need to overcome.
- 5Surroundings
How other people and circumstances affect the situation.
- 6Advice
What the cards advise you to do — the most practical card in the spread.
- 7Outcome
Where the situation lands, given all the cards before it.
How to read the spread
Read the horseshoe from left to right like a story: past → present → hidden → obstacle → surroundings → advice → outcome.
The top of the arc — the obstacle card (4) — is the centre of the spread: it shows what stands between you and what you want. The advice card (6) usually answers it.
If you dislike the outcome, reread the advice: it shows what you can change right now.
